Primary Care

The VA Great Lakes Health Care System is able to offer the finest personalized care to you through our Primary Care Program, in which all eligible veterans are encouraged to enroll.  VA healthcare is no longer restricted to specific "disabilities."  Enrolled veterans are eligible for the Medical Benefits Package, and receive all the medical services and hospital care they need in the setting that is most appropriate for them.

Primary care extends beyond the boundaries of outpatient care, encompassing acute, long-term, and home care.  The efforts of the primary care team ensure your care is provided in the most appropriate setting by the most appropriate caregivers.  You will be assigned a Primary Care Provider or Team.  The provider may be a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.  The team generally includes doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, dietitians, social workers and pharmacists.  Through this coordinated approach, proper referrals are requested when specialty expertise is needed.
