VA Great Lakes Health Care System Announces New Director at Iron Mountain VA Medical Center

WESTCHESTER, Ill. – Daniel S. Zomchek, Ph.D., FACHE, Network Director, Veteran Integrated Service Network (VISN) 12, is pleased to announce that John P. Shealey, DBA, has been selected as the new Executive Director, Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center (OGJVAMC), Iron Mountain, Michigan, effective February 26, 2023.

Shealey currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer at UnityPoint Health, Lucas County Health Center. He is responsible for the operation and management of the 24-bed acute care hospital with emergency department and ambulance service in Chariton, Iowa. Additionally, Shealey currently serves as an adjunct faculty member for both the University of Saint Francis and Huntington University.

Shealey is an eight-year Veteran of the United States Army and has over 20 years of healthcare management and leadership experience in the Department of Veterans Affairs and the civilian sector. He has served as a member of the Executive Leadership Team for Northern Indiana Health Care System (NIHCS) as the Associate Director, as well as the Assistant Director. Shealey was responsible for all aspects of administrative operations within the NIHCS. He has provided leadership and oversight in managing total budget expenditures of $400 million in fiscal year 18, as well as $158 million in capital investment projects throughout the health system.

Shealey earned a Doctorate in Business Administration from Capella University and Masters degrees in Healthcare Administration and Business Administration, a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Finance, and an Associate of Arts in Business Administration.

OGJVAMC is located in Iron Mountain, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The facility oversees seven community outpatient clinics located in Ironwood, Hancock, Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie, Gladstone and Menominee, Michigan, and Rhinelander, Wisconsin. It also operates a Rural Health Outreach Clinic in Manistique, Michigan. OGJVAMC and its clinics annually serve 20,000 Veterans. OGJVAMC has the largest geographic patient service area east of the Mississippi River, encompassing fifteen Michigan counties and nine counties in northeastern Wisconsin.

The VA Great Lakes Health Care System, VISN 12, with its eight medical centers, 40 outpatient clinics, eight nursing homes, and seven domiciliaries, offers health care services to almost 800,000 Veterans who reside within its four-state (Illinois, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Wisconsin, and Northwest Indiana) area.
