VA Great Lakes Health Care System Announces New Director at Milwaukee VA Medical Center

WESTCHESTER, Ill. – Daniel S. Zomchek, Ph.D., FACHE, Network Director, Veteran Integrated Service Network (VISN) 12, is pleased to announce that James D. McLain, has been selected as the new Executive Director, Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center (Milwaukee VAMC), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, effective April 23, 2023.

Mr. McLain currently serves as the Deputy Director of Zablocki VA Medical Center.  He is responsible for executing the Director’s guidance for planning, organizing, coordinating and controlling the daily operations of a 435-bed health care facility with a $600 million budget and over 4,200 employees. The organization consists of a 270-acre main campus and four community-based outpatient clinics, providing primary, specialty, and mental health care to over 64,000 Veterans across eastern Wisconsin.

Mr. McLain began his military career in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and deployed with the 101st in 1990 for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and with the 3rd Area Support Medical Battalion in 2003 for Operation Iraqi Freedom. His military assignments include Brook Army Medical Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Patterson Army Health Clinic, and the United States Embassy, Bangkok.

Mr. McLain earned a Bacholor of Arts in Chemistry and History from Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, and a Masters in Healthcare Administration from Baylor University, Waco, Texas.

The Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center is located on the western edge of Milwaukee and is part of VISN 12, which includes facilities in Iron Mountain, Michigan; Tomah and Madison, Wisconsin; and North Chicago, Hines, and Chicago, Illinois. The medical center delivers primary, secondary, and tertiary medical care in 168 care acute operating beds and provides over 1,200,000 visits annually through an extensive outpatient program. The nursing home care unit of 113 beds offers geriatric programming and the 125 domiciliary beds are the locus of programs in Substance Abuse Rehabilitation, Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder care.

The VA Great Lakes Health Care System, VISN 12, with its eight medical centers, 40 outpatient clinics, eight nursing homes, and seven domiciliaries, offers health care services to almost 800,000 Veterans who reside within its four-state (Illinois, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Wisconsin, and Northwest Indiana) area.
